Toyama Ryu Standard Cuts - Suihei 水平

Level horizontal cut going from left to right and then reversing and cutting from right to left.

  • Start in Seagon Kamae
  • Announce the name of the cut “SUIHEI” and move the sword to the starting position.
    • Movement should start with kissaki
    • Step forward and out with the left foot
    • Step backward and out with the right foot
  • Starting Position of cut
    • The feet should be pointed out at 45 degrees
    • The knees should be bent and the torso lowered
    • The back should be straight
    • The torso should be rotated about 15 degrees to the left
    • Keep the shoulders down and even
    • The left hand should be directly in-front of and slightly below the navel
    • The katana should be pointed to the left and slightly to the rear
    • The ha should be forward and slightly downward
    • The katana should be perfectly horizontal
  • Making the first cut
    • The cut is initiated by starting to rotating the torso towards the front
    • The left hand should rotate and the right hand push forward to snap the kissaki straight forward
    • Reach towards a point in-front of the left foot
    • The cut should be perfectly horizontal
    • The ha is angled slightly down from horizontal until reaching a point at least in-front of the right foot
    • The ha is rotated clock-wise at the end of the cut
    • The left hand should never move from in-front of and slightly below the navel
  • Finishing position of the first cut
    • The feet should be pointed out at 45 degrees
    • The knees should be bent and the torso lowered
    • The back should be straight
    • The torso should be rotated about 15 degrees to the right
    • Keep the shoulders down and even
    • The left hand should be directly in-front of and slightly below the navel
    • The katana should be pointed to the right and slightly to the rear
    • The ha should be forward and slightly downward
    • The katana should be perfectly horizontal
  • Making the second cut
    • The cut is initiated by starting to rotating the torso towards the front
    • The left hand should rotate and the right hand push forward to snap the kissaki straight forward
    • Reach towards a point in-front of the right foot
    • The cut should be perfectly horizontal
    • The ha is angled slightly down from horizontal until reaching a point at least in-front of the left foot
    • The ha is rotated clock-wise at the end of the cut
    • The left hand should never move from in-front of and slightly below the navel
  • Moving back to Seagon Kamae after all cuts
    • Step forward with the right foot and backwards with the left foot while bringing the sword into Jōdan no Kamae (Upper guard with point of sword pointed up and slightly back)
    • Lower the katana into Chudan no Kamae (middle guard with point of sword level with throat) by making a slow motion Jodan cut.
