Standard Cuts (Kihongiri) 基本切り

The 8 basics cuts are performed as part of the warm-up exercises at the beginning of each class.  They are done after the bow-in ceremony.  Each cut is repeated ten times.  Maintaining proper form is very important. 

General Notes

• Students should be arranged in two staggered lines facing each other so there is no-one directly in-front of them.  Alternative is a large circle. 
• The class should be arranged going up in seniority in a clockwise direction.  The newest student is to the left of the instructor.
• All cuts start in Seagon Kamae
• Students should pay attention to the instructor and emulate them
• The instructor announces the first cut (Jōdan) and this task passes down in rank for each cut.
• The announcer should count in Japanese BEFORE making each cut

Basic Cuts

• Jōdan: High vertical cut
• Chudan: Middle vertical cut
• Gedon: Low vertical cut
• Hidari Kesa: Falling diagonal cut to the left
• Migi Kesa: Falling diagonal cut to the right
• Migi Kesa Gyaku Kesa: Diagonal cut to the right / reverse diagonal cut
• Hidari Kesa  Gyaku Kesa: Diagonal cut to the left / reverse diagonal cut
• Suihei: Level horizontal cut going from left to right / right to left.
